Well Dressing 2026 will be from Saturday 25 July to Sunday 2 August – More details will posted early 2026.
Well Dressing is an enjoyable and fulfilling experience & you don’t have to be on the Committee to participate. We have a team of volunteers to do specific tasks to suit your skills or interests. Contact us to find out more.
Fell Race
You can now book for the Fell Race on Thursday 30 July. Distance 8.5km Ascent: 308m.
Starting from the Playing Fields before heading along the concessionary footpath to The Moon Inn. Then the climbing starts with a complete ascent of High Street before turning down Black Harry, back up onto Longstone Edge before descending steeply to Combes Dale. Just before you get back to the playing field there is a sting in the tail with one last climb before returning to the playing field. Find out more and book.

Our Allotment Plot
Our Allotment Plot 4A was ploughed recently by Adam Styles (many thanks to Adam) and now that the soil has warmed up a bit + we are almost clear (hopefully) of frosts, it’s ready for planting.
So please if you or anyone you know is splitting plants or has seedlings (preferably perennials) of any description that may be suitable for Well Dressing please can you let me know. Mobile 0787 947 1425 or email [email protected]
Rosie is happy to collect, or they could be left in my porch @ 3, Old Malthouse, The Bank, or left at Plot 4A on the allotment site. If you’re feeling energetic, you might like to plant & water in your offerings yourselves – anywhere at all on the site, there is no formal plan it’s a blank canvass – so please enjoy adding to a new tapestry of possibility & let’s get planting…!

Children’s Well
Call out to all the children and young teens in the village… would you like to design and create your own panel on the Children’s Well this year?
Last year’s well looked amazing with seven panels created by children from the village and two from the school, so we’d love to do it again.
Lots of help and guidance given, so it’s easy to have a go and be part of Stoney’s rich well dressing history!
Parents – let Amanda know via her Facebook page if your child would like to find out more. I’ll then organize a meet up to give all the details and discuss ideas – Thanks Amanda.

Thank you to everyone who supported our Well Dressing in 2025 - we hope you enjoyed Wells and all the supporting activities.

Scarecrow competition
Thank you to everyone who entered – first prize went to this fabulous spider!

Welcome to the Stoney Middleton Well Dressing website. We aim to maintain & promote the custom of Well Dressing for present & future generations. Our Well Dressing Week incorporates a week of varied activities for all ages, these include a treasure hunt, model boat race, quizzes, brass band, children’s events, sports events & fell race to name but a few.
Profits from Well Dressing Week are ploughed back into the village community. For 2025 we invite any local group to apply for a grant.
Stoney Middleton Well Dressing was started in 1936 by Ted Shimwell and our well dressings consists of 3 wells.
- Main Well Dressing: on The Nook, near St Martin’s Church.
- Children’s Well Dressing at the entrance to a house on The Nook, next to the Main Well Dressing.
- Bath House Gardens Well Dressing: Follow the Nook around to the spring near the old Roman Baths.
Our Well Designer for 2025
Si Homfray has designed our Main Well and Bath House Well, he is an artist, designer, author and adventurer – he has a gallery in Hathersage by the station – find out more…
The Children’s Well is being deigned by a team of young people from the village.
Like all our designers he has given up his free time to design the Wells and will be making a short address at the Opening Ceremony – where he will be available to chat about his designs and the process he went though.
Would you like to design our Wells in future years?

The position is voluntary but you will get lots of support from the many experienced petallers and previous designers.
